Harvest Dinner & Whodunnit to support the Rideau Environmental Action League

The Rideau Environmental Action League conducts community-wide environmental projects and promotes environmental improvements within the Town of Smiths Falls and Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Counties.

REAL is combining a local food Harvest Dinner with a Murder Mystery performed by local actors, for a special evening out on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Smiths Falls Curling and Squash Club.

Joanne Edwards, Executive Chef of The Cove in Westport, is composing a fabulous fall feast featuring foods grown and produced in Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, and the Smiths Falls Community Theatre will challenge diners to solve a murder mystery set at a fall fair.

Chef Jo’s buffet dinner will include smoked trout, sausage, turkey, pork and goat, along with vegetables in many styles, sourced from farmers and producers in the region, many organic. Dinner will be topped off with the best of fall cuisine – homemade apple and pumpkin pies. Gluten-free diners will be pleased to know the whole meal will take their choices into account.

Several actors from the Community Theatre will engage with diners through the appetizers and dinner, dropping misleading hints, answering questions and providing tips that lead to solving the murder by dessert! Doors open at 5:30, with a social hour from 6–7PM, and dinner at 7PM.

REAL is genuinely sorry that they will not be able to offer their annual Christmas concert by the Central Band of the Canadian Forces, as for many years the concert had marked the beginning of the Christmas season in Smiths Falls. The band members always enjoyed the warm welcome they received here.

The concert was REAL’s major fundraiser of the year. “We hope everyone will translate their support for the concert into support for the dinner,” said Barb Hicks, REAL past president and chair of the dinner committee. “Funds raised will support our many local environmental projects.”

Committee members are currently contacting past business and organization supporters and patrons. Tickets for the Harvest Dinner and Murder Mystery Evening are $50 (and include a charitable receipt for $15), and are available at the REAL Deal, 85 William Street West in Perth, from Thursday through Saturday, or by contacting Barb at or 283–9966. For more information, including the proposed menu, see REAL’s website.
