This weekend is shaping up to be a great one for art lovers in Almonte. Not only can you see inspiring work at local galleries and museums — you can also try your hand at making some!
First off, younger artistes are welcome all week at JB Arts on Mill Street, where owner Jeff Banks welcomes walk-ins during his “More Mess March Break”. Classes run all day in a variety of media!
On Friday March 20, adults can make their own terrarium in a workshop offered by Acanthus Floral & Botanicals in the Heritage Court at the bottom of Mill Street. Then on Saturday, there’s a crochet star stitch workshop at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, where you can also check out the featured exhibit of cheerful and artful hooked rugs by fibre artists Lesli Zanetti & Loretta Moore.
Head back up Mill Street to General Fine Craft, Art & Design, where you’ll find a wide variety of works by local and Canadian artists, as well as a special exhibit by Maria Gomez Umana. Entitled “Heal”, it showcases encaustic and mixed-media constructions. Meet the artist herself at the vernissage on Sunday, March 22 from 1-3pm.
Up near the top of Mill Street, drop in at Textile Traditions and participate in their “Stash Dash Poker Run” Shop Hop. Collect playing cards from a minimum of 5 of the 17 participating shops in the area for shopping spree prizes, or at least 10 to enter for Grand Prize basket “chock full of quilting supplies”. Then grab a bite to eat, visit some more of the other terrific shops in Almonte, and go on home and make your own art!
