“In a world where there are millions of book titles available at a single touch, it’s hard not to feel like a very small fish in a ridiculously enormous pond. But the smaller and friendlier ponds created by our local independent bookstores act as a reminder that real people are out there reading our books…”
The above was written by local author Liane Shaw, who will be appearing at both Mill Street Books in Almonte and Backbeat Books & Music in Perth as part of Authors for Indies Day on May 2. The best way to find the details on everything that’s happening in this neck of the woods is to grab a copy of the April issue of theHumm, but here’s a whirlwind tour in case you don’t have one handy…
Authors for Indies is an exciting new annual event that was created to support independent bookstores, and it’s scheduled to take place nationwide. Local authors will be volunteering at participating stores — greeting customers, recommending books, and highlighting the importance of supporting independent bookshops in Canada. In our area, the following bookstores will be participating:
Backbeat Books & Music in Perth, who will host Liane Shaw, Charles de Lint, MaryAnn Harris and Julie Paul. Their events will take place from 10am-5pm.
Mill Street Books in Almonte, where Jan Andrews (11am-noon), Susan Delacourt (noon-1pm), Tim Cook (1-2pm), and Liane Shaw (2-3pm) will be appearing, and a posthumously-published book of art and poems by Adrianna Steele-Card will be launched.
The Bookworm in Perth will also be offering 10% off books by local authors that day.
