A Soup-er, Seedy Saturday in Almonte

After a cold, snowy long weekend, it’s good to know that there are a multitude of events coming up in Almonte that are well worth venturing out for!

On Saturday, February 20, you can take your pick of three daytime events. From 9am to 3pm you can get a glimpse of Spring by attending the Seedy Saturday event at the Almonte Civitan Club. There you’ll find vendors of heritage seeds, a seed exchange table, presentations on gardening, and booths by organizations such as the Neighbourhood Tomato and the Canadian Organic Growers. Admission is $2 (or free if you clip the ad on page 9 in this month’s issue of theHumm!).

MVTM-Soup-for-Thought-bowlsFor lunch that day, may we recommend attending the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum’s “Soup for Thought” fundraiser. A mere $20 gets you delicious soup (donated by one of several fabulous local restaurants), dessert and coffee provided by the Friends of the MVTM, and a beautiful hand-made ceramic bowl (donated by the Almonte Potters Guild). Sittings are from 11:30-1 and from 1:30-3, and tickets can be found at the Textile Museum, Baker Bob’s or Pêches et Poivre.

AA-Gurmukh-Close-Up.12And if yoga is your thing, you won’t want to miss an afternoon Kundalini workshop with Gurmukh that same day. This pioneer in yoga and mind-body-spirit connections is coming all the way from Los Angeles to lead a practice and meditation from 2:30 to 5pm at the Almonte Old Town Hall. Tickets are $51 (pre-paid from Baker Bob’s or by sending an e-transfer, or $62 at the door. Please bring your yoga mat and a blanket.

The following weekend brings another full Saturday (February 27), with the annual Mid-Winter Milling event taking place from 10-5 along Mill Street, and a Folkus concert featuring Craig Cardiff with opening act Jennifer Noxon at the Almonte Old Town Hall at 8pm. And on Friday, February 26, curlers (both novice and experienced) can get their rocks off at the Almonte Curling Club’s Hopspiel! Catering is by Foodies Fine Foods and local beer will be provided by Whiprsnapr Brewing Company. Tickets are only $25, by emailing Rob or calling 256-5081. There’s a second chance to curl up and eat on Sunday, February 28, at the Celtfest Curling Funspiel, also at the Almonte Curling Club. That one starts at 12:30pm, and $25 gets you three games and some delicious chili!
